Born in Borneo, an island in South East Asia, I
grew up in a small village of about 500 people. There were no
electricity or tap water (water
had to be carried from the river). As a child, I had always love art & connecting with people. I dreamt of traveling the world, meeting people of different nationalities, races, religions and learning their cultures.
I went to school in Singapore at 13 yr. old. London at age 19 to further my education there. While living in London, I traveled around U.K & Europe (Holland, France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Scotland and Ireland). It was a wonderful education on the different European cultures. I returned to Singapore after London and traveled throughout Asia for work & holidays (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, China, Burma and Australia. In 1995 when I traveled to Myanmar(Burma) I had a wonderful spiritual connection with the places, cultures & people in the villages of Bagan & Mandalay which has inspired me in my paintings.
l lived & worked in Hong Kong from 1996 to 1998 where I studied Chinese art, cultures & calligraphy paintings. I moved to New York to live & pursue my dream to be an artist in 1999. My strong positive outlook in life & spiritual strength has helped me to stay focused on my art while in NYC. New York is a wonderful city. I love the omni-nationalities and diverse cultures of NYC have inspired me in my artworks - particularly The Olympix series.. The Olympix Series (spell with an x) represent people connecting with one another. The colorful ellipses reflect people of different colors and races connecting with one another, creating understanding, tolerance & harmony amongst us. The Olympix Series is in part, a departure point from the Olympic Games logo. My other series are The Organic Abstract Series & The Portraits series. These oil paintings have the common theme of connecting people & their environments.
I have exhibited in solo & group exhibits in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Convention Center & May Tower gallerie. In New York at The Cork Gallery, Avery Fisher Hall,, The Park Avenue Atrium, The National Academy juried show, The New York Public Library, The Southampton Culture Center, East Hampton Artist Studio, PaulaBarr Gallery, ArtNebo Gallery Chelsea NY & ArtRayChelsea Gallery NYC. My artworks have been purchased & collected by people of wide nationalities & profession all over the world. Ang-Ray
